JSON Formatter & Validator
Paste JSON and format it readably, minify it for transport, or just validate it — with the parser's error position when something is wrong. Free, no signup, everything runs in your browser.
Note: this tool accepts strict JSON only (RFC 8259). Comments, trailing commas, single quotes and unquoted keys are errors, not auto-fixed. There is no JSON Schema validation in this version and no URL import — pasted text only.
What Is the JSON Formatter & Validator?
A free JSON formatter is a tool that takes raw JSON — the data format behind APIs, configs and data feeds — and makes it readable, compact, or checked for errors. Paste JSON, choose an indent, and this tool formats it with clean nesting, minifies it to a single line, or validates it and reports the parser's error position when it fails. If you need a JSON formatter for an API response or a config file, this page does the formatting and the checking in your browser.
What Is It Used For?
Developers use it to read API responses that arrive as one long line. Bloggers use it to check schema markup and feed files before publishing. Data editors use it to tidy config files. Students use it to learn JSON structure by seeing nesting clearly. Support teams use it to spot the exact position of a broken payload.
Key Benefits
- Format, minify and validate — three jobs in one box, from the same pasted input.
- Clear error positions — when parsing fails, the message reports where the parser stopped, so you fix the right spot.
- Indent choices — 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or a tab, to match your codebase.
- Optional key sorting — sort object keys alphabetically for stable, diff-friendly output.
- Copy or download — take the result as text or as a ready .json file.
- Completely free and private — no signup, and nothing you paste ever leaves your browser.
How to Use This Free JSON Formatter
- Paste your JSON into the box — an API response, a config file, or a schema block.
- Choose the indent (2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tab) and tick key sorting only if you want keys alphabetized.
- Click Format for readable output, Minify for a single-line version, or Validate only to check without changing anything.
- If validation fails, read the error position, fix that spot in the input, and run it again.
- Click Copy or Download to take the finished JSON.
Common Mistakes to Avoid With JSON
- Trailing commas. A comma after the last item in an object or array is valid in JavaScript but an error in strict JSON — remove it.
- Single quotes and unquoted keys. JSON requires double quotes around both keys and string values; single quotes are not accepted.
- Comments in JSON. JSON has no comment syntax. A // note inside the data breaks parsing — keep notes outside the file.
- Confusing validation with schema checking. A file can be valid JSON and still be wrong for your API — this tool checks syntax, not whether the fields match a schema.
- Pasting JavaScript objects. undefined, functions and trailing commas work in code but not in JSON. Convert them first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this JSON formatter free? Yes, completely free — no signup, no limits, no account.
Is my JSON uploaded anywhere? No. Formatting and validation happen entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.
What is JSON? A text format for structured data, built from objects, arrays, strings, numbers, true, false and null. APIs, configs and data feeds use it because it is simple and language-independent.
What does "strict JSON" mean? JSON as defined by RFC 8259: double-quoted strings, no comments, no trailing commas, no single quotes, no unquoted keys. Anything looser is not JSON, even if JavaScript accepts it.
What does the error position mean? The character position where the parser gave up, as reported by your browser's JSON parser. Count from the start of the input to find the broken spot — a missing comma or quote is usually just before it.
Can it fix my broken JSON automatically? No. It reports the error and its position, but it does not guess fixes — an automatic fix could silently change your data.
What does key sorting do? It rewrites every object with its keys in alphabetical order. It does not change values or meaning, but it makes files easier to compare.
Does it validate against a JSON Schema? No, not in this version. Schema validation (checking that required fields exist and types match) is a separate job and is not included here.
Can I import JSON from a URL? No. A browser page cannot fetch arbitrary URLs, so this tool works on pasted text only. Copy the response and paste it here.
What is the difference between Format and Minify? Format spreads the JSON over lines with indentation for reading; Minify compresses it to one line with no extra spaces for transport or storage.
Does formatting change my data? No. Formatting and minifying only change whitespace (and key order, if you tick sorting). Values stay identical.
Why does my valid JavaScript object fail here? Because JavaScript objects allow things JSON forbids: single quotes, unquoted keys, trailing commas, undefined and comments. Convert those first and it will pass.
Does it work on mobile? Yes. The tool runs in any modern mobile browser and the layout adjusts to small screens.
Final Thoughts
Broken JSON wastes more debugging time than it should, and the fix is usually one comma away. Paste it here, read the error position, fix that spot, and move on.
